Good evening all!
Ok this one's going to be short, because I'm pretty tired and leaving for Chicago early tomorrow, but we've successfully moved my dad to the Neuro ICU at UCLA Medical Center. Even after visiting for a short time this evening after his transfer, we are already feeling this was a good move. He is a very large, private room, with constant care from a wide variety of staff, all specifically trained to care for patients with neurologic conditions. One thing we find particularly reassuring is that he is being monitored continuously by an EEG machine to keep an eye out for seizure activity (so far, so good).
His activity today was minimal, but he was given meds to prevent seizures during the transfer which subdued him somewhat (oh but he did stick his tongue out at my mom, and moved his toe for Paula). Plus, if I'm tired, think how he must feel...
We are really excited about this move and are extremely interested to hear what his new neurologist has to say about his condition and prognosis (up to this point there hasn't really been any). Although we are aware that this might not mean a huge change in treatment, we are much more comfortable knowing he'll be getting the best care for his condition possible. If the situation were reversed and one of us was sick, I know he wouldn't have it any other way.
I'll keep you posted!

Allie,
ReplyDeleteThank you for your efforts in posting the blog and giving us a continuing view of your dad's progress. We understand and expect that from here forward, most of his improvement will occur in babysteps. We will be following closely and cheering him on from the sidelines.
Kindest regards,
Ron, Terry and Caroline
Allie - your title! I thought we'd been hacked!
ReplyDeleteBut upon further review, it looks like UCLA Neuro ICU is a great place for Tom to further his progress. Go Bruins!
Have a safe and expedient trip to Chicago.
I look forward to my trip to LA next week to see Tom and Anne and Grant and hopefully you, and as many family friends as I can!
Go Brucks!
Even though I miss you guys at Los Robles, I'm so glad you were able to make the UCLA Neuro ICU happen. I'll be watching Tom's progress and sending virtual hugs to all of you!
ReplyDeleteBest wishes,
Heidi Christensen
Allie - Thank you for the update and particularly for the joy you capture in each and every occurrence. I think of you all every day and will touch base to see if I can come down/as when appropriate. Safe travels, Lori
ReplyDeleteThanks for keeping everyone posted about your dad. Im not sure if you know yet but my dad was sent to the ER last night. While my mom, dad and a few of their friends were out at the horse race track, he was having trouble catching his breath. His heart rate was 155, SPO2 was around 78, and his blood pressure was very low. He was taken by an ambulance to the hospital. Then they transfered him to the cardiac ICU. They pumped him full of fluids and antibiotics (slight pheneumonia). We are not really sure (I think the doctors dont really know either) what brought this on. He probably over did it on friday with playing with my neice and taking a shower. Anything that he does is a difficult task. All of his test came back negative (this is very good because I thought it might be heart failure). This morning he was doing alot better. His HR went down to 110 (still a little high but much better),SPO2 was up to 95, and his blood pressure was around 100/60 (this is about normal for him, he always has low blood pressure) Last night it was like 80/50. They said that he looks better in person than on paper. They just transfered him to the stepdown unit and hopefully he will be sent home by Tuesday. Its like the men in our family (Tom, Bill, and Wayne) are taking their turns in the hospital. We need to get everyone healthy and keep them out of there!! Jayson and I are still praying for Uncle Tom and Your Family!! Keep your faith. Prayers are very powerful!! I have a good feeling that he will pull through this. This new hospital seem to be the right place for him to get the best care possible. Take care and have a safe trip back to Chicago. Please keep us posted on any change
ReplyDeletelove you
